Joan Trumpauer Mulholland was a white teenager from Arlington, Virginia who became a civil rights activist and Freedom Rider during the time of segregation in the South. This is the first biography about Joan, as told by her son, which details Joan’s life and the experiences she participated in during that time period. After reading this book, it’s easy to see why she is seen as an inspiration figure to many people. Her dedication to standing up fro justice is admirable for children of any age. Primary source documents such as letters from Joan to her mother mixed with photographs taken during civil rights movements and protests add to the authenticity of this book. Great for readers ages 8 and older who are interested in history and learning more about the civil rights movement and segregation in the South. Also recommended for children searching for a strong female leader to look up to.
